From Classroom to Skill Lab: My First Clinical Practice Experience

As a BSc Nursing student, most of my learning initially took place in the classroom. We studied subjects like anatomy, psychology, and fundamentals of nursing, and our teachers explained everything theoretically. However, the real excitement began when we were told that we would be going to the skill lab for the first time. I felt nervous and a little curious about everything that was going to happen there.

The skill lab is a place where we first learn procedures and methods before going to the hospital. It looks like an exact model of a hospital, with beds, mannequins, and medical equipment. When I entered the skill lab for the first time, I felt as if I had stepped into a hospital ward. I was confused as well as excited about what I would learn and what procedures we would perform as it was all very new for me.

Our instructor, Ms. Somashree, taught us the fundamentals of nursing. The first thing we learned was hand hygiene to prevent infection. It was so important that every student had to demonstrate the seven steps of medical handwashing correctly. The next day, we learned about personal protective equipment (PPE), including how to wear it properly and the different items it includes, such as masks, gowns, goggles, gloves, and shoe covers.

We then learned about vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration. We were asked to check each other’s vital signs, which was both fun and exciting. Some of us got it right, while others made mistakes, but our instructor guided us and showed us the correct methods. At first, it was difficult to remember everything, but with regular practice, it became easier and helped build our confidence.

Another important skill we learned was bed making and different patient positions. We also became familiar with basic medical terms. Although these procedures looked simple, they were a bit difficult to remember at first. However, once we understood the steps clearly, they became easier to perform.

We also learned about cold application. Our instructor demonstrated the procedure and explained that it is used for patients with high body temperature, a condition known as pyrexia. Through this, I understood how to care for a patient with fever and how to perform the procedure correctly.

Throughout the sessions, our instructor carefully observed each student’s practice and corrected our mistakes. She also reminded us that nursing is not just about performing procedures but also about caring for patients with kindness and respect.

My first clinical practice experience in the skill lab helped me understand the importance of practice in nursing. It helped me overcome my fear and prepared me for real hospital experiences. I realised that every small step we learn in the lab will help us take better care of patients in the future.

Moving from the classroom to the skill lab gave me a completely new learning experience. It made learning more interesting and practical. This experience has motivated me to become a skilled and compassionate nurse. I would like to say that the skill lab plays a very important role in nursing education. My first experience there was memorable, and it inspired me to continue learning and improving my clinical skills to serve patients better in the future.
