Overcoming challenges as a Nursing Student

I am Ridamiat Tang, a 2nd year GNM student, sharing some tips for overcoming challenges as a Nursing student.

Nursing school can be both exciting and challenging. With demanding coursework, clinical rotations, and personal responsibilities, staying on track requires planning and determination. Here are four unique strategies to help you navigate nursing school successfully:

1. Organize Your Time Effectively

Time management is your best ally in nursing school. Begin by jotting down everything you need to accomplish in a week—classes, study sessions, clinical shifts, work hours, and personal tasks. Use a planner, a digital calendar, or even a time-blocking app to map out your schedule. Prioritize urgent tasks while leaving room for flexibility. By sticking to a routine, you’ll not only stay on top of your responsibilities but also create room for relaxation and self-care.

2. Adapt Your Study Techniques

Most of us have certain habit patterns when studying and this plays an important role. Reflect on how you learn best—are you a visual learner, an auditory learner, or someone who learns through hands-on activities? For example, visual learners might benefit from colorful diagrams and charts, while auditory learners could record lectures for later review. Additionally, carve out a dedicated, clutter-free study area that suits your needs. Whether it’s a quiet corner at home or a spot in the library, a well-organized space helps you focus and absorb information effectively.

3. Focus on Small Achievements

The path to becoming a nurse can feel daunting, so breaking it down into smaller goals can make it more manageable. Set daily or weekly objectives, like reviewing a chapter, mastering a skill, or preparing for a quiz. Celebrate each milestone—no matter how small. These mini-victories build your confidence and remind you that progress is being made, keeping you motivated to reach your ultimate goal of earning your degree.

4. Build a Support System

Your relationships in nursing school are a powerful resource. Connecting with professors can provide valuable insights and mentorship. They can clarify concepts, guide your learning, and even open doors to future opportunities. Meanwhile, forming bonds with classmates creates a circle of people who understand your experiences. Sharing study tips, discussing challenges, or simply having someone to lean on during stressful times makes the journey more enjoyable and less isolating.

By mastering these strategies, you can overcome the hurdles of nursing school and set yourself up for success. Stay organized, remain motivated, and draw strength from those around you. Your journey to becoming a skilled nurse is one step closer with every effort you make.
