My name is Sajitha P K, Final year GNM student. I wanted to share my first clinical posting experience !.
My first clinical posting at Sri Sri Hospitals was both exciting and educational. It marked the beginning of my practical training as a nursing student, a crucial step in shaping my professional skills. Before diving into hands-on tasks, we attended an orientation session, where we were briefed about the hospital’s environment and the responsibilities we would handle. This session laid the foundation for what turned out to be an insightful and valuable learning experience.
After the orientation, I was posted to the laboratory for sample collection. This area focuses on the collection of various patient samples, including blood and urine, for diagnostic purposes. In the lab, I met a staff nurse and a lab technician, both of whom played pivotal roles in my training. They welcomed me warmly, and after introducing ourselves, they began guiding me through the basics.
The first lesson was about the different tools and articles used for blood sample collection. The staff nurse and lab technician introduced me to the various blood collection tubes, each marked with a different color. These tubes serve different purposes depending on the type of blood test to be conducted. For example, some tubes are used for coagulation tests, while others are for complete blood count (CBC) or biochemical analysis. The lab professionals explained that using the correct tube is critical to ensuring accurate results.
They also demonstrated the process of drawing a blood sample, explaining the importance of proper technique and equipment. They introduced me to the tourniquet, needles, syringes, and swabs—essential items in blood collection. The staff thoroughly explained how to identify the correct vein for venipuncture, ensuring minimal discomfort for the patient and reducing the risk of complications. Their professional experience shone through as they walked me through each step, patiently answering my questions and ensuring I understood the nuances of the procedure.
To reinforce the lessons, they assigned me some homework, which included researching the different types of blood collection tubes and their specific uses. This exercise helped me gain a deeper understanding of how critical it is to select the right tube for each test, as it can affect the quality and reliability of the results.
As part of my training, I was fortunate to witness a live demonstration when a patient arrived for a blood test. The lab technician explained the steps in real-time, guiding me on how to find the correct vein and explaining why certain veins are preferred for blood sample collection. Watching the procedure firsthand was incredibly valuable, as it gave me a real sense of the precision and care required in this process.
By the end of my first clinical posting, I had learned an incredible amount about blood and urine sample collection. The hands-on training I received in the laboratory not only enhanced my knowledge but also boosted my confidence in performing these procedures. This initial experience was a significant step in my journey as a nursing student, providing me with practical skills that will be essential as I continue my professional development.
