Infection control practices in hospitals are essential measures used to prevent and reduce the spread of infections among patients, healthcare workers, and visitors. Hospitals are environments where many individuals with weakened immune systems receive treatment, making them more vulnerable to infections. Therefore, strict infection control policies and procedures are necessary to ensure patient safety and maintain a healthy healthcare environment.

One of the most important infection control practices is hand hygiene. Proper handwashing with soap and water, or the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers, significantly reduces the transmission of microorganisms. Healthcare workers are required to clean their hands before and after touching patients, after exposure to bodily fluids, and after contact with potentially contaminated surfaces. Sterilisation and disinfection of medical equipment and hospital surfaces are also critical infection control measures. Instruments used in medical procedures must be thoroughly sterilised using methods such as autoclaving, chemical sterilisation, or high-level disinfection. Similarly, hospital surfaces like bed rails, tables, and medical devices must be cleaned and disinfected regularly to eliminate harmful microorganisms and reduce infection risks.

For the patients with contagious infections, isolation precautions are implemented. These precautions help prevent the spread of infectious diseases to other patients and healthcare staff. Isolation may involve placing the patient in a separate room, restricting movement, and limiting contact. Healthcare workers must use appropriate PPE while caring for such patients.

Safe waste disposal is another important aspect of infection control. Hospitals generate different types of biomedical waste, including sharps, contaminated materials, and infectious waste. Proper segregation, handling, and disposal of these wastes reduce the risk of infection and environmental contamination. Sharps such as needles and blades must always be disposed of in puncture-proof containers.

Environmental cleanliness also plays a vital role in infection prevention. Regular cleaning of hospital wards, operation theatres, and patient care areas helps remove pathogens. Adequate ventilation, safe water supply, and proper sanitation facilities further support a hygienic environment.

In addition, education and training of healthcare workers are essential. Staff must be trained in standard precautions, correct use of PPE, hand hygiene techniques, and waste management practices. Continuous monitoring and supervision ensure that infection control guidelines are followed consistently. Surveillance systems also help identify and control infection outbreaks by tracking infection rates and implementing timely corrective measures.
